American Soccer Weekly Rekrap: Another El Tri win, a U-20 coach, and the MLS draft - Stars and Stripes FC

American Soccer Weekly Rekrap: Another El Tri win, a U-20 coach, and the MLS draft - Stars and Stripes FC

The calendar turned to 2020 this week and it will be a year of contrasts across the US Soccer landscape. On one hand, the US women will look to avoid another early exit in the Olympics while the US U-23 men hope to qualify for the first time in several cycles. The senior men’s team will try to show some progress, or something, as the year will have Nations League and World Cup qualification matches highlighting the calendar.

As several leagues are having their winter break, there wasn’t a huge amount of news this week, but here are some stories to catch up on.

The most attended national team games in America were for... not the USA

Guess who drew the most fans of any national team in the United States... I’ll wait. It’s Mexico. The numbers weren’t even really close as El Tri averaged 57,546 fans a game, while the US men drew 23,306 per match according to World Soccer Talk. This shouldn’t exactly be a surprise as Mexico plays in bigger venues while the MNT hosts matches in baseball stadiums.

An interview with Zack Steffen about his career and goals in Europe

After transferring to Manchester City and being loaned to Fortuna Dusseldorf, Zack Steffen spoke with the Associated Press about his time in the Bundesliga and why he thinks he’s been successful in his career. One person he credits is Tim Howard. Steffen noted that the former USMNT starting keeper was an inspiration not only for his international game aspirations, but also for showing a path to a pro career in Europe.

The USWNT U-20s have a new coach

Utah Royals and former Seattle Reign manager Laura Harvey will be taking a new job as she’s set to take over the role of USWNT U-20 manager. While US Soccer has had trouble filling vacant coaching jobs recently, it appears that moving to Chicago suits Harvey. After failing to progress out of the group in the 2018 U-20 World Cup, Harvey will attempt to qualify and then better that mark in this year’s edition of the tournament being held this summer in Costa Rica and Panama.

Generation adidas players named by MLS

Can you feel that? The electricity in the air. The feeling of anticipation and the knowledge that the fate of players and teams will be etched into stone where every decision is critical for the future of MLS teams... it can only mean one thing. The MLS Superdraft is upon us. MLS is doing this again for some reason and has announced the new crop of Generation adidas players. For those unfamiliar with the Generation adidas concept or those who are interested in the league but want to know if there are any ridiculous roster rules that will determine if you keep following it or not, these players salaries do not count against the salary cap. This is an effort to fill roster spots while driving down wages across the league, give teams an incentive to develop youngsters.
