Longtime Poland girls soccer coach earns spot in hall of fame - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Tom Basel, who guided the Poland High School girls soccer team to a 23-0 record and a state Class D championship in his final season, will be inducted into the NYS Girls Soccer Hall of Fame in September.

Basel, who recently announced his retirement from coaching after building one of the top small-school girls soccer programs in the state over 23 seasons, is one of 13 inductees in the fourth year for the hall, which is maintained by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports.

It was a perfect way to go out for Basel, who this week was honored as the Syracuse.com and Post-Standard All-Central New York small schools girls soccer Coach of the Year. Basel also was the state girls soccer Coach of the Year in Class D.

Basel has a 349-92-15 record for his career. Poland also won a Class D state title in 2012 and finished second four other times. The Tornadoes have won eight Section III championships under Basel.

His daughter, Leah, was a senior on this year’s team, and she and teammate, Riley Wisheart, were the state’s Co-Players of the Year for Class D.

The induction ceremony will be held Sept. 12 at Niskayuna High School.
